A true story:
A friend of mine asked me to quote him on a computer system for
his home. I recommended a quality brand I had been selling for more
than 5 years. It had a three year warranty and was built from
quality components. Very few had required warranty repairs over this
period but the manufacturer had always promptly supplied any
required parts when needed.
My friend went bargain hunting and he got a 'great deal' from
another company and saved around $300 over the price I had quoted
him. He was very proud of being able to get a better deal than I
could offer him. The computer only had a twelve month return to base
(RTB) warranty instead of 3 years on-site but it didn't worry him at
all.
Within the first twelve months the computer went back for repair 4
times. Once for a power supply, twice for a new motherboard and once
for a new hard disk. In total he was without his computer for about
one month in the first twelve. Very soon after the warranty expired
the mother board failed again. He then realised that another repair
wasn't viable and threw the computer away.
He finally understood he was $1600.00 down the drain, without a
computer. He then bought a 'quality' computer for around $1900.
What this means of course, is that if he had spent the extra $300 in
the first place and bought quality, he would be $1600 better off,
and without the frustration of ongoing problems.
